“Family-friendly” on a makerspace website can mean anything from a dedicated youth program with trained instructors to a single dusty LEGO bin by the door. Here's how to tell the difference — and the access paths that work best at each age.

Decode the age policy first
Every space has one of four real policies, whatever the website says. Ask directly: (1) Kids welcome with a parent everywhere, (2) kids in youth programs only, (3) teens solo after certification (usually 14–16+), (4) adults only. None of these is wrong — a 60W laser room has good reasons for rules — but mismatched expectations waste everyone's Saturday. The parent's job during shop time
If it's supervise-your-own: you're a spotter, not a phone-scroller — one parent per active kid near machines, and you'll need the same safety basics they do. Either way, debrief in the car — 'what did you make? what broke? what's next?' is where the learning compounds.
