Evaluation Guide
Makerspace Tour Checklist: What to Notice Before You Join
A tour checklist for evaluating tools, training, storage, safety culture, community fit, accessibility, and hidden costs.
First impressions that matter
A good tour should show how members actually move from orientation to safe independent tool use. Notice whether staff can explain training steps clearly, whether machines look maintained, and whether members seem comfortable asking questions.
The checklist
| Area | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Training | Required classes, signoffs, refresher rules |
| Access | Hours, guest policy, reservation system |
| Safety | Dust collection, laser ventilation, PPE, incident process |
| Community | Project nights, beginner help, respectful shared-tool etiquette |
Hidden cost questions
Ask about material markups, storage fees, class fees, consumables, failed-job policies, and whether certification expires. If you mainly need one prototype, organizations like OCreate can be a better path than joining a space.
